Clean Lines, Furniture Styles & Well-Planned Details Define Today's Kitchen Designs

Cathy Carr, of Pohlig Homes and Lisa Pilotti Campbell, of Metric Realty brought their fresh perspectives to a classically designed and newly built home in Berwyn - Now Under Contract!

Today’s kitchens are larger, open and more efficiently designed to serve as the hub of the home, where family gathers after work and in the evenings to do homework, share meals and entertain friends. However, kitchen designs, once elaborate and ornate, are actually returning to the basics.

Stainless steel, once used abundantly in the kitchen, is today used sparingly, mostly for cooktops and wall ovens rather than refrigerators and dishwasher panels.

Cabinetry no longer showcases complicated designs and moldings. Now, the most ornate elements are the two-tone colors, with furniture-looking cabinets set at varying heights and depth to add interest. Additional options, including glass doors and corner turn-posts, add charm and character instead of an overage of details.

Appliances are fully integrated into the kitchen, with cabinet-matching paneling used to ensure sufficient camouflage. This also applies to refrigerator drawers and dishwashers, many of which feature top instead of front controls.

Built-in message centers are also popular, as are custom stains and paints in shades such as whites (off whites) grays and browns – accessorizing with pops of color. Used on door fronts, drawers and other detail areas, paints are often combined with glazes to enrich the colors and accent certain kitchen areas or details.

The finishing touch is the hardware. Today’s fashion statement, hardware choices are becoming increasingly vast and complex, with an array of styles and finishes meant to complement light fixtures and overall kitchen designs.

Regardless of the style you prefer, there is likely an option or two waiting to be chosen. Once you decide, make sure the resulting design of your kitchen matches your lifestyle. Vintage, modern or traditional, just remember, it is all in the details!
