In designing their new Gladwyne home, the Harris family wanted to express their love of the outdoors by bringing that environment inside.
Pohlig achieved this vision with an English arts & crafts-style residence designed around the active lifestyle of this mountain biker and a marathon runner, and their two teenage sons. From the natural color palette to the absence of a formal living room, the family-friendly home has a rustic yet refined personality.
The 7,600-square-feet house carries a traditional exterior of gray stone with red brick accents. A limestone framed entry leads to fresh, contemporary interiors. As soon as you open the front door, you can see straight through the house to the beautiful backyard - a dramatic, uninterrupted view from the foyer hall to the great room to the fire pit on the terrace.
The centered, open floor plan of the rustic yet refined great room, with reclaimed barn beams at the vaulted ceiling, is warmed by a stone and limestone fireplace. The dining room features a tiled, barrel-vaulted ceiling and warm, blue shades that are evident throughout the house, complimenting natural tones of gray, cream, and charcoal. The modern kitchen features shaker-style cabinets in a muted industrial palette and counters of distressed white marble set off by the metallic silver, glass tile backsplash.
A switchback staircase with iron balusters and wood railing lead to the Zen-like master suite with a linear fireplace set into a wall of ledge stone. The master bathroom with vertical marble walls showcases a free-standing, rectangular tub and open, glass shower stall. The family retreats to the naturally-lit lower level for a workout in the exercise room or to enjoy their outstanding display of model trains.
